Tackling infant mortality and early pregnancies: the Dadé Kaolé association meets with the Baka communities in the Messok district

From June 16 to 19, 2024, the Dadé Kaolé Association traveled through the 14 camps in the Messok District, in the Haut-Nyong department, Eastern region of Cameroon. This field mission, led by the Coordinator Iverick Nkopanic, accompanied by the Deputy Coordinators Brigitte Lime and Valère Gbamisso, was part of the fight against infant mortality and early pregnancies among young girls.

For four days, the Dadé Kaolé team met with Baka young girls to inform them about the dangers of early pregnancies and their consequences on the health and future of adolescents. Issues related to childbirth conditions were also at the heart of the discussions, as deliveries outside health facilities remain a major cause of maternal and neonatal deaths in the area.

In total, 27 traditional birth attendants were made aware of the risks associated with deliveries outside health centers. They were invited to systematically refer young pregnant women to the nearest health facilities for proper monitoring of their pregnancy and a safer delivery.

The Dadé Kaolé association has committed to strengthening the Bosquet medical center with quality equipment, in order to provide better care for pregnant women and reduce the risks associated with childbirth in this isolated locality.

This field visit demonstrates Dadé Kaolé's determination to work for maternal and child health within the Baka indigenous communities, among the most vulnerable in Cameroon.z to write here.
